How To Bring Christmas Spirit Into Your Home

I'm not going to lie, as soon as it hit September and we were officially in the "ber" months, I was already in the Christmas spirit. September was also my birthday month so I focused more on that, but once those celebrations died down, I started planning for Christmas.

I actually had my Christmas shopping done in October (granted, I only shop for Daniel), but will continue to pick up more things here and there as I think of them up until Christmas. Daniel and I are usually really good with our shopping - we had all our presents before December last year, as well - but I started extra early this year so that in the later months I could save for our holiday in January.

Whilst Christmas has been on my mind for months already, I feel like now is the appropriate time to really start getting into the Christmas spirit and actively planning food, decor and the actual day. I never had a routine growing up. Some Christmases were great, whilst others were non existent due to our rocky home and financial situation, but since Daniel and I moved out on our own, things have been a lot more stable.

We are starting to establish traditions that we will hopefully continue for a long time to come, and this year I've got a couple of new ones to add to the list as I have been looking up popular Christmas traditions to try and see if we enjoy them. Without further ado, here are all the ways I plan to bring the Christmas spirit into our home these holidays!

This is the most obvious one, but it's one of my favourites nonetheless. Putting up the tree and decorating it on the first of December has been our tradition for a few years now, and even though I certainly wouldn't mind putting it up earlier, I know that then is a good time to do it. It really is the perfect way to start off the month of Christmas!

If you're from Melbourne, there's no doubt that you would have heard about the Boulevard Christmas lights in Ivanhoe. It's got to be the most popular place to go see Christmas lights as everyone in the neighbourhood goes all out. Daniel and I have been for the last few years, but it's an exhausting feat. It takes hours to see it all and get through the basically stationary traffic, which means it's a huge fuel sucker. I absolutely love the lights and think it's worth it all, but we'll probably try somewhere new this year. I really do recommend seeing them if you haven't yet though!

All throughout primary school and a little bit into high school, I was a huge card giver. I loved buying Christmas cards to give out to everybody I knew - and I loved getting them from fellow schoolmates as well - but I haven't done that in quite a while as no one else that I know does it. I really enjoy making Christmas cards for Daniel though, so I am looking forward to doing that!

We all know that I love candy and Christmas, so of course a Christmas-themed candy would be something that I adore - and it is. I actually have candy canes in my house all year round because I always buy too many during Christmastime, but that doesn't stop me from buying more each December! I love using them as decor - and eating them, of course. I might make some candy cane-related crafts this year as well.

From the use of the word "try" in the title, it's obvious that this is one of the new ones that I wish to add to my list this year. Eggnog and Christmas seem to go hand in hand, and even though I don't think I'm going to like it, that's not stopping me from giving it a try! If I like it, it will be one more way to celebrate Christmas throughout December.

My Christmas movie knowledge is severely lacking. Sure, I saw the Grinch Who Stole Christmas and the National Lampoon Christmas Vacations a bit when I was a kid, but that was basically it. Last year I bought Daniel all the Santa Claus movies, so I'll probably give them another watch sometime soon, but this Christmas I want to see all the Christmas movies that I haven't seen yet. I've got a huge list of ones that I apparently have to see, and I might even review them on here! I am really looking forward to this part of Christmas.

This is another brand new item on the agenda. I have never made a trifle before - I can't even remember ever eating a trifle before - but since I've fallen in love with being in the kitchen this year, I thought I'd give it a try. Trifle bowls are popping up all over the place so it won't be hard to track one down. I'm really hoping to fall in love with trifles - and making them - so that I can add this to one our yearly traditions. I'll be sure to update you on whether or not mine turns out like a disaster, so keep an eye out for that!

Is there anything that you do every year at Christmastime that you always look forward to? Is there anything that you'd like to start doing? I love hearing about how everyone spends their Christmas!

Until next time,
Indya xx
